Delighted to see our beloved Singaporean composer, Zubir Said, featured on Google Doodles today for his 107th birthday. In honor of his birthday, here is a video of "Gelora Asmara", a song sequence from the film "Chinta" (1948), lip-synced by Siput Sarawak and S. Roomai Noor as protagonists in the film.

We love this film as it shows our former shores of Punggol Point (Tanjong Punggol) and Pasir Gudang across the straight where no coastal promenade, warehouses or cranes were in sight - just lots of coconut trees and hills on the horizon.

These are the lyrics, if you are wondering what they were saying and feel like singing along. There are some parts that I couldn't transcribe, so if you manage to figure the words out, please let us know :)

Gelora Asmara

S. Roomai

Duduk berpandangan di tepi samudra yang biru

Berpegangan tangan, memandang alam permai

Muar bergirangan dibuaikan angin yang lalu

Berdendang-dendangan di atas (pasir) rumah

Siput

Hiburan asmara, ombak samudra

Melenakan kita dalam (bersuka)

Chorus

Gelora asmara mengindah hari suasana, janganlah berlomba bagai ombak samudra

S. Roomai

Hmmm hmmm hmmm..

Cinta sangat murni, menyatukan di dalam hati

Merehatkan diri, sambil menyanyi-nyanyi

Siput

Dimanakah dia? Di jantung hati Sudah hilang di mata adakah lagi?

Chorus

Dalam sanubari …. asmara teriringi dengan … ombak samudra

Second Man

Oh cinta, oh jantung hatiku

Ku serahkan jiwa ragaku

Oh bunga, oh intan, oh oh batu

Marilah kemari ku pangku

Second Woman

Ini bunga bukan bunga labu

Bukan senang dapat dirayu

Jikalau semacam rupamu

Tak ubah serupa burung hantu

Enjoy!
